YouTubers Vs Bollywood stars what is future of entertainment in India ? This is a question that arises in our minds more often than not. So let’s get an answer to it.

With changing times, the choices, likes, dislikes, pleasure changes for all of us. The core reasons why humans have come so far is because we are open to new things, new dynamics, new learnings and we are very progressive in nature. With growing digitisation specially if we talk about India, it seems the real boom is still to be witnessed.

If we specifically talk about YouTube there are more than 265 million active Indian users every month and the latest study suggests that by 2022, three in every four Indians will have access to YouTube. The numbers speak for itself.

When YouTube made their entry to India in 2008, it covered only 3.5% of the population while now it covers more than 30% of population and is expected to touch 40-50% by 2022-2023. Never had anyone thought that the online streaming platform will have so much of acceptance in a country, where visual medium is considered the home of the stars.

On the other hand, Bollywood is considered as a fairyland in India. In 2019, Bollywood sold across 1.03 Billion movie tickets across India, an increase of 11.6% was witnessed as compared to 2018. In 2019, Bollywood earned a whopping amount of Rs 10,948 Crore, films like Kabir Singh, War, Uri: The Surgical Strike contributed to this amount.

Now let’s get back to the question Will the YouTubers overtake the Bollywood stars in terms of fame, connect, worth in the coming years ? When we discuss about Bollywood Stars, it’s specifically the younger lot of actors, not the Bachchan,the 3 Khans and Akshay Kumar.

YouTubers like Carryminati, Bhuvan Bam, Amit Bhadana, Ashish Chanchlani, Prajikta Kohli are household name, they have changed audience perception and carry a huge fan following. The pioneers of the digital industry have made a name for themselves and have made into People’s heart.

Here we will draw some comparisons between YouTubers and Film Stars and who will dominate the entertainment industry in the coming years:

In terms of fame:

There is no iota of doubt that Bollywood stars enjoy a huge fan following, not only in India but also in overseas. The die hard fans are devoted to their favourite actors and give their blood and sweat to just spend a moment with them. No matter wherever they go, there are crowds waiting for them clapping and cheering. But there is certainly a block between a Bollywood star and his fans.

Fans still have a feeling that Bollywood celebrities are someone whom they cannot reach to, they can only admire their favourites from a distance. They are somewhat different from rest of the people.

This is not the case with YouTube stars, fans have a very loyal connect with their favourite YouTubers. There is brotherly or friendly relation between a YouTuber and his/her audience. The fans see a part of themselves in their favourite YouTuber. Here content plays an important role, YouTubers have recognised this, hence you have YouTubers putting out consumer engaging content.

In terms of appeal through their work:

Big Indian YouTubers like Carryminati, Flying Beast, Ashish Chanchlani, Bhuvan Bam, Amit Bhadana at an average gets 20-30 million views per video. Carryminati aka Ajey Nagar (21 year old) currently India’s biggest YouTuber has 1.699 Billion total views while his other channel CarryIsLive has more than 660 million total views. The stats clearly states that the appeal of YouTubers among the masses is increasing with each day.

On the other hand decrease in footfall is a big concern for the industry, In recent years there was no growth in footfalls, however in 2019 an increase of 8-10% footfalls were witnessed by the industry. If an actor crosses 100 Crore mark this seems a big number, but if we look closely he is appealing to only 10 million people (given that a movie ticket costs Rs 100 in today’s time).

In terms of opportunities:

It is not hidden, how difficult it is to make a name for yourself in the movie industry. Hardly we have seen actors coming from humble background making it big into the industry (exceptions are always there). The likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Late Sushant Singh Rajput, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Tripathi, Randeep Hooda, Vidya Balan, Vidyut Jammwal, Taapsee Pannu are among few people who made a name for themselves in the industry, but after a lot of struggle.

The probability is 1 out of 100 for a newcomer with no filmy background to make it big in film industry. We have seen instances where talented individuals after a long struggle don’t get opportunities and fair run. They end up being nowhere.

In the case of YouTube, if you are talented enough there is no stopping for you. The Digital Giant gives its creators a proper platform, everything is based on what value the YouTubers provides to their audience. You don’t need to be dependent on someone to get views or appeal, if you are determined and passionate enough you will surely get the result.

In YouTube, ultimately the fate is decided by the audience. If the YouTuber is able to connect with his audience who are devoting their time to watch his videos, it’s a success. YouTubers like Carryminati, Bhuvan Bam, Prajikta Kohli have a paved a way and showed a path to every aspiring YouTuber.

In 2018, there were 300+ channel with a more than a million users, the number increased to 1200 channel crossing this milestone by 2020. The numbers prove that, the possibility of getting success for a YouTuber is more than a young actor without any background.

In the recent times, we have seen how Bollywood people are understanding the power of YouTube. Actors like Shah Rukh Khan collaborated with BB ki Vines for his movie promotion (Zero). YouTube makes you a household name. Alia Bhatt, Disha Patani, Vidyut Jammwal and many more have started their YouTube channel inorder to gain more connect with their fans. In the coming years, it will be of no surprise if the top YouTubers of the country starts ruling the entertainment industry.
