Wikipedia, the top destination for anything you want to know or study about. The online encyclopedia has served selflessly to its billions of user since many years in gaining wisdom and knowledge. Every kid or a student received a helping hand from the company whenever they needed.
But today, the company is seeking for help from its Indian users so that it can continue its operations and serve the users. Recently notifications are being sent to Indian users, the notification reads, “It’s a humble request, Wikipedia is willing to accept Rs 150, although users can opt to pay even more. We’re non-profit that depends on donations to stay online and thriving, but 98% of our readers don’t give, they simply look the other way. If everyone who reads Wikipedia gave just a little, we could keep Wikipedia thriving for years to come. The price of a cup of coffee is all we ask”.
The free website is non profit organizations, where content is collected, managed and edited by a group of volunteers. The website avoids running any add as it believes, it can hamper the experience of its users.
The online encyclopedia is world’s seventh largest website, while it reaches to the screens of 771 million visitors in India, making it the fifth largest number from any Country in terms of page views. India being the wide market can help in getting substantial capital which will help in maintaining the servers of the company.
Founded in 2001, the website ranks among top 15 website as per Alexa ranking. Wikipedia was created by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. The word ‘wikipedia’ was derived from wiki and encyclopedia. Comprising of more than 1.5 million articles, the online encyclopedia attracts 1.5 Billion visitors per month.
This is not the first time that the non profit organization is seeking for help. Earlier in 2015, WMF had clarified that the donation from the philanthropists helps the company going. However will Wikipedia be able to persuade the Indian users for donation is the biggest question now ?
