Why Quad is far from becoming ‘Asian NATO’ ?

Quad an Asian NATO

As Australia decided to rejoin in Malabar Exercise 2020 after 13 years, people started speculating that ‘Quad‘ is taking the shape of ‘Asian NATO‘.

The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue is an informal strategic forum between the United States, Japan, Australia and India.

But commenting that Quad has the capability to become an Asian NATO is too early.

As of now it is maintained by semi-regular summits, information exchanges and military drills between member countries.

As mentioned above Quadrilateral Security Dialogue is maintained by summits and information exchange. But information exchange between Quad members are very limited and ineffective.

Not only information exchange, the intelligence sharing is also limited in between these four countries.

Even if we talk about the Malabar Naval exercise that Quad members used to conduct every year, it is also ineffective without full system and communications interoperability.

Malabar Exercise is almost like same exercise which Indian Navy used to conduct with every friendly nation.

However, China seems very uncomfortable with Malabar Exercise and they are definitely not happy with these drills.

Quadrilateral Security Dialogue lacks interoperability, intelligence sharing and a military alliance, which as of now restricts Quad from becoming a NATO like organisation.

Even the Indian Minister doesn’t seems very confident in making strategic alliance between India, US, Japan and Australia a ‘NATO’ like military alliance.

“The underlying idea is a consistent India. Independent India will express itself very differently and that is today in an example like Quad. Quad is not the only example where four countries have found it useful to consult on issues which are in their common interest,” Jaishankar said in response to a question on whether India is involved in building an “Asian NATO”.

With the statement of Jaishankar, it isn’t clear that what Indian Government really wants with Quad.

If the members nation of Quadrilateral Security Dialogue feel China is a big threat then maybe Quadrilateral Security Dialogue in future will become a NATO like military alliance against People’s Republic of China.
