When will cricket revive in India ?

The coronavirus pandemic has forced the entire world to go on a halt. Tomorrow is uncertain, whether there will be a flattening in the curve or steep rise in the number of cases. In India, the source of entertainment after Bollywood is Cricket. When people are locked inside their homes, they want some thrill, some excitement, some heartbreaks which a Cricket match offers. Every single person in India has a special connection with Cricket. But seeing the ongoing situation will cricket resume soon?

The last International match was played between New Zealand and Australia. It was played behind closed doors. India played it’s last match against South Africa and since then the sports industry has come on a standstill.

Guidelines for lockdown 4.0 related to sports

The government on May 17 issued a new set of guidelines for Lockdown 4.0. In the guidelines it is clearly stated that, “the sports complexes and stadia will be permitted for sports activities. However Spectators will not be allowed in these complexes. This is a big relief for BCCI (Board Of Control For Cricket In India)

Why it’s important to resume Cricket ?

During the fiscal year 2020-2021 total annual income of BCCI is estimated to be over INR 3730 Crore. The IPL brings a huge chunk of money for BCCI, nearly $1 Billion. BCCI can’t afford to let go this much revenue. The Broadcasters Star India has paid nearly whopping amount of 16,347.5Crore for acquiring the global rights of IPL from 2018-2022.
Not only BCCI and the Broadcaster but also the IPL franchises will suffer a huge loss if IPL is cancelled this year.

Other than the financial aspect, India has a very big domestic circuit. More than 38 teams play in India’s Domestic Circuit. Every Cricketer is not a millionaire. BCCI needs to provide security and bear the cost of different Cricket association. The Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, Irani Cup these all provide opportunities for young players to showcase their talent. If these domestic tournaments gets cancelled this will impact the careers of many young players, as well as it will caused an effect on the IPL auction next year. The first class cricket has played a key role in India’s success in International Cricket.

Cricket is a saviour for this nation during these unprecedented times. When the T20 World Cup is near, the team needs to keep on playing matches and look into different combinations and need of the team. It will become impossible for players to directly land in Australia and go into the cricket field.
After the World Cup 2019 defeat, fans expect India to play fairly good in Australia and conquer the world cup. The team management needs to look at different players and their forms, and form of the players can be regained only in matches not in the nets.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has taken a step forwarded.  West Indies and Pakistan are all set to tour England this july. Pakistan will play three match Test and a T20 series in a bio secure venue.

In India if Cricket gets revive, it should be with IPL. The stakes involved in IPL is very high. But this could only be possible once the travel restrictions are lifted and the international flights comes back into action. IPL without overseas player is a glamourized domestic tournament, and people will not be as keen to see it. If at all it gets started, it will be without crowd. The pandemic will bring a lot of changes in the field of sports in the coming days. The dynamics, the methods everything will change post Coronavirus pandemic.
