Kerber started with a 3-0 lead but 109th seed Anna-Lena Friedsam broke back in the match but then lost his own serve in the 6th game which saw her, at last, handing the 1st set to Kerber. Kerber, broke again in the 2nd set and played his game and won the match but Friedsam really made her work hard for this victory as she pushed the 2nd set into the tie-breaker which she lost by 6-8.
“It was really a tricky match & when you play against a German it’s not easy mentally,” Kerber, playing his 50th grand slam said.
