From past 90 years, Oscar is considered to be the biggest milestone for any movie. Every year around the globe, thousands of movies were made but very few of them were nominated for the Oscars.
For the 92nd Academy Awards, Zoya Akhtar’s Gully boy is the official entry in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ from India selected by the jury of Indian film federation.
But there’s one more worthy enough Film from India that deserves the spotlight and appreciation and that is Lijo Jose Pellissery directed “JALLIKATTU“.
The O. Thomas Panicker produced Jallikattu is a film based on the short story Maoist by Hareesh. The plot follows a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the entire village men gathering to hunt down the animal.
This film is a visual treat but has some really disturbing scenes throughput it’s running time, so if you are a light hearted person it is requested to not watch the movie alone.
This is totally a non-spoiler review. I will just discuss the brilliant technical aspects that I and every viewer of this film liked. If you want to watch the movie right now, it’s available on AMAZON PRIME VIDEO. The movie is only in Malayalam audio with English subtitles.
WHY THE MOVIE DESERVES AN OSCAR?
• PERFECT RUNNING LENGTH FOR AN ACTION MOVIE
With a running time of 1Hr 34min it becomes a gripping thriller to witness that will keep you intacted till the end with small small surprises after every passing frame.
• SOUND DESIGNING
Good sound always make a piece of work more beautiful. In this film, the sound designing by Renganaath Ravee and team is one of it’s key feature. The mixing & adding of sound effects really increases the pace of the story.
Undoubtedly, Jallikattu has the best cinematography in a feature film in 2019 for me. Cinematographer Gireesh Gangadharan will literally pulls you into the film with his POV perspective shooting techniques. There are some really stunning one take running shots that are so intense that you will start feeling the rush just by watching it. And those Aeriel shoots will make you say wow and how at the same time. The scenes were that well written and shot that you won’t even need dialogue to understand it.
A good editor knows how to create suspense and interest in every scene possible. Film Editor Deepu Joseph did the same here. His method of editing really matches the desired tone for the film. The editing was very grippy and sharp.
In Indian Cinema right now, you will see the same kind of story with just some few changes being made and released every week. But when you’ll watch Jallikattu, you’ll find a new original story that is interesting, dark, meaningful, logical and intriguing. If you will watch it calmly, you will get to learn many life lessons from it. I’m not even kidding, I personally learned many lessons. If I have to give away any internal Information about the film, then it will that this film shows the real nature of today’s Human. It shows how a human can turn into beast for the fake Greed and Glory.
• USE OF CHARACTERS
There are very few movies in this world where you’ll see junior artist’s character been used properly and to it’s limits. From the lead actors to the background actors, everyone has something to do in this movie.
Everyone has a story to tell in this film and the writing made it look so seamless that the character development won’t bother at all.
• LOCATION AND ENVIRONMENT CREATION
Look the film needs to be filmed somewhere in the woods to create that dark environment for the story development.
• THE CLIMAX
For me, Happy Ending is never interesting. The Climax scene in this one, is the best ending any movie can ever get. You will be confused, questioning yourself what happened, why it happened, what the director wants to show. You will definitely learn a lot just from it’s ending.
• LIJO JOSE PELLISSERY
Hands down one of the best filmmaker of recent times. His way of storytelling is something different, something new and something that impressive that it is now pulling audiences to the theatres only just by reading his name in the banners.
JALLIKATTU was first screened at TIFF on September 6, 2019 and then was released on October 4, 2019 in Kerala. Being a movie lover, I always wants to experience something new in the theatres and this movie has given me that. So if you want to experience the same you can now stream the movie in Amazon prime videos. But remember this is a Malayalam movie so you need to switch ON the Captions.
