IPL season 13 is likely to be hosted by UAE. The decision came after Appex Council Meeting which was held via valid conference on Monday,
IPL 2020 was scheduled to begin from 29th March, but the Coronavirus pandemic forced the IPL Governing Council and BCCI to postpone the tournament indefinitely. But now according to latest developments UAE will be hosting the 13th edition of the IPL, if ICC (International Cricket Council) postpones the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. According to latest report, BCCI (Board Of Control For Cricket In India) is targeting the September- October window, by shortening the tournament to 5-6 weeks.
This will not be the first time that the country will be hosting the IPL. Earlier in 2014, UAE has hosted the first phase of the tournament as it was clashing with Lok Sabha Elections in India.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly during a recent interview with India Today said, “I will put it in this order. Firstly, whether we can (have an IPL) within the time frame, as the IPL has a limited window. Secondly, (host it in) India. If it’s not possible, then we are thinking of going out (abroad). But going out where…because if you go out, it becomes expensive for everyone — franchises and board. Because of the conversion rate and currency exchange rate, it becomes expensive. So we are monitoring but as I said, we are very keen to host it and (have) got our fingers crossed”.
There were strong rumours about the Sri Lankan Board and the New Zealand Board offering to host the 13 edition of the IPL, however Sourav Ganguly denied all these reports. The importance that IPL holds for Indian Cricket as well as World Cricket is not hidden from anyone.
Lot of money is at stake and it was assumed, BCCI will go all out to organise this tournament. If the cash rich league gets cancelled BCCI will incur a loss of more than INR 4000 Crore along with all the stakeholders.
Till now UAE has recorded 50,000 Coronavirus cases and 300 deaths while in India the number of positive cases have touched million mark. With proper safety protocols and empty stadiums, UAE will be a perfect host for IPL Season 13.
