Kerala Cricket Association appoints Tinu Yohannan as Kerala’s Head Coach

On Monday, Kerala Cricket Association names Tinu Yohannan as Head Coach of Kerala State team replacing Whatmore. The decision was taken in general meeting via online.

Tinu Yohannan

Under Whatmore Kerala progressed as a team and achieved many heights. It was already assumed that Tinu Yohannan will be appointed as the head coach of Kerala Ranji Team. Yohannan went on to represent India back in 2001, and became the first player from Kerala to represent India. Tinu Yohannan made his test debut against England.

Whatmore helped the team in attaining success. Kerala progressed to quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy in 2017-2018 and bettered their performance in the following year when they reached semifinals. The 2019-20 season turned out worse for Kerala as the team was demotivated to Elite Group ‘C’.

In a chat with Onmanorama, Yohannan said: “It’s an exciting challenge. I have been part of this family and one big plus is that I am no stranger to the players. My aim is to create an atmosphere in which each player is able to perform to the best of his ability.”

This will be Yohannan second term with the Kerala team. In 2014, Yohannan was appointed as Bowling Coach but permanent suspension of P Balachandran in 2016 forced Yohannan to take up the job of Head Coach. However later, Tinu was replaced by Whatmore.

When Kerala is not doing good as a team, it will be interesting to see how Tinu Yohannan takes the team forward.
