Special court has given him a death sentenced under Article 6 of Pakistan’s Constitution. Article 6 of constitution says “Any person who abrogates or subverts or suspends or hold in abeyance, or attempts or conspires to abrogate or subvert or suspend or hold in abeyance the Constitution by use of force or show force or by any other unconstitutional means shall be guilty of high treason.”

The punishment for High treason in Pakistan is Life imprisonment or Death. In this case Musharraf gets a death penalty.

The 3 judge Bench of special court has given this verdict in a 2:1 split decision. This is first time in the entire history of Pakistan, that a Army General has been sentenced to Death. Misharraf.

Musharraf can appeal against this decision in Superme Court of Pakistan which he surely do.

Musharraf came into rise after a bloodless Military Coup in 1999. This military coup came after the loss of Kargil war against India. Nawaz government was unhappy with a sudden misadventure by Army even without informing the government. Afterwards Musharraf in October 1999 seized the power of democratically elected Prime Minister and took over the power of government.

But this martial law by Musharraf was widely disapproved and invited mass demonstration in all over Pakistan led by Nawaz Shariff, and eventually Musharraf resigned. This martial law bacame the main reason for fall of Parvez Musharraf.

When Nawaz Government again came into power he filed a case against Musharraf in December 2013. Musharraf was indicted on March 31, 2014, and the prosecution had tabled the entire evidence before the special court in September the same year.

However, due to litigation at appellate forums, the trial of the former military dictator delayed and he left Pakistan in March 2016 to seek medical treatment, promising the court to come back to his “beloved homeland” in a few weeks.

As of now Misharraf is living in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. He was admitted in a hospital due to bad health.

After the verdict he has released a video clip in which he says “I have served my country for 10 years. I have fought for my country. This [treason] is the case in which I have not been heard and I have been victimised,”
