From last 31 years Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is the Supreme Leader of Iran preceded by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Although, its wasn’t clear that Ali Khamenei permanently transferred his power to Mojtaba Khamenei or it is temporary.
Theoretically, the Supreme Leader is elected by the Assembly of Experts. However, all candidates for membership at the Assembly of Experts are appointed by the Guardian Council, whose members in turn, are appointed by the Supreme Leader.
Currently, Mojtaba Khamenei oversees several intelligence and security department in Iran.
