On Wednesday, the 3 member CAC(Cricket Advisory Committee) appointed former Indian Spinner Sunil Joshi as the chairman of National Selection Panel. The CAC member consists of Rudra Pratap Singh popularly known as RP Singh, Madan lal and Sulakshana Malik. The CAC also appointed ex pacer Harvinder Singh in the five member committee. Sunil Joshi will replace MSK Prasad as the Chief selector, who served the Indian Cricket for 4 years. The Cricket Advisory Committee had shortlisted 5 candidates for the interview they were, Sunil Joshi, Harvinder Singh, Venkatesh Prasad, Rajesh Chauhan and L.S Sivaramakrishnan.
Harvinder Singh was chosen from central zone and will replace Gagan Khoda in the panel. The existing members of selection panel are Devang Gandhi(East), Jatin Paranjpe(West), Sarandeep Singh(North).
Earlier there were talks that Ajit Agarkar or Dinesh Mongia might acquire the post of Chief Selector but it was surprising to see that they both were not even shortlisted for the interviews.
After the names were shortlisted, everyone assumed that LS Shivakrishnan will be the new Chief Selector but Sunil Joshi came as a dark horse and became the Chief Selector.
Sunil Joshi played for India in the white jersey in 90’s. Sunil Joshi was the former bowling coach of Bangladesh. India is going to face SA on 12th March so it’s a good move by BCCI that they are proactive and have appointed the selectors panel before the beginning of the series. Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh will continue but the tenure of rest of three selectors will get over by September or October.
What can we expect from the new selection panel?
The biggest question is will the selectors have a stake and power in taking tough calls.
These panel of selectors are assumed to select the squad of the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. It’s very necessary for this selection panel to hold accountability and have a clarity of what they want to achieve.
After the loss in the semi final against NZ, the sentiments of billion people were hurt so the fans are expecting that India lifts the T20 World Cup and in order to achieve that the selectors and the team management needs to get answers of some big questions. If the selectors again turn out to be yes man, the results might be again disastrous. It’s the duty of the selectors to give players to the coach and the captain, and when the captain of a stature like Virat Kohli is there it becomes difficult for the selectors to say no.
Hope this panel of selectors helps in attaining the World Cup for India.
