Rohit Sharma, Vinesh Phogat and two others recommended for prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award

Indian opener Rohit Sharma, Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Table tennis player Manika Batra and  2016 Paralympic Gold Medalist Mariyappan Thangavelu have been recommended for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. The award is the highest honour for the sportsperson in the country.

If Rohit Sharma is awarded with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, he would be the fourth recipient from Cricket after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Rohit’s phenomenal run helped team India in reaching the semi final of ICC World Cup 2019. Rohit in 50 over format scored 9,115 runs in 224 matches, averaging 49.27. India’s limited over vice captain is the only player to have 3 double century in 50 overs format. In 2020, Rohit Sharma has been named the ICC ODI Player Of the year.

Vinesh Phogat

Vinesh Phogat the sister of Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari is the only Indin woman wrestler to win gold in Commonwealth as well as Asian Games. In 2014 Commonwealth games defeating Yana Rattigan of England, Vinesh won the gold medal. Vinesh beat Japan’s Yuki Irie in Women’s 50 Kg Freestyle Wrestling, won the gold medal and created this feat. Earlier she has been awarded with Arjuna award in 2016.

Manika Batra

As of 17 April 2020, Manika Batra is the best female table tennis player in India and ranks 63 in worldwide according to ITTF Rankings. Batra won 3 medals in 2015 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship (silver in women’s team event, women’s doubles event and bronze in women’s singles event). Manika Batra defeated lead Indian Women’s team to win to win gold medal by defeating Feng Tianwei and Zhou Yihan. Batra along with Mouma Das won silver medal in  Women’s Double Category at 2018 Commonwealth games. By defeating Yu Mengyu, Batra set a record of being the only Indian woman to win individual gold medal at Commonwealth games.

Mariyappan Thangavelu is a pride of the nation. Mariyappan is India’s first Paralympian Gold medalist after 2004.  Mariyappan Thangavelu won gold medal in Paralympic held in Rio de Janeiro. The Paralympian has also been awarded with Padma Shri and Arjuna Award for his contribution towards Indian Sports.
