The remdesivir drug is showing positive response on people who are infected with the covid virus, although the preliminary tests were done on very small group of people and their was a sign of improvement in their health. The virus is developed by Giled sciences and it can help in fighting coronavirus according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Friday.

The results are still not clear because the number of people on whom the drug was tested is very small. 68% (36 out of 53 patients) had improvement in Oxygen support and only 15% worsened. The experts are still finding out, have the drugs caused the worsening of health of those 15% people. 57% (17 of 30 patients) on ventilators were taken off and 3 of 4 on ECMO (Extremely ill) were taken off.

“We cannot draw definitive conclusions from these data, but the observations from this group of hospitalized patients who received remdesivir are hopeful,” said Jonathan D. Grein, Hospital Epidemiology director at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, while the lead author of journal article said, “We look forward to the results of controlled clinical trials to potentially validate these findings.” according to The Washington Post.

Of the 61 patients who received atleast one dose of remdesivir drug, data of 8 patients could not be tracked. The patient on whom drugs were tested are from United States, Europe, Canada and Japan. 25 patients were discharged while 7 patients died, the morality rate is 18%. More than half of the patients suffered from several side effects ranging from rashes, diarrhea to kidney problems.

In the upcoming days, the drugs will be tested on more people, then only the medical scientist will get a clear picture whether this drug can save tons of life.
