In a live session with Aaj Tak editor Indian Opener Gautam Gambhir credits MS Dhoni for Rohit Sharma’s success. Gautam believes Dhoni had immense belief in Rohit’s ability. Rohit Sharma who made his debut in 2007, under MS Dhoni’s captaincy was struggling to cement a proper place in Indian team, but the captain backing took him where he is today.
Rohit became a complete player since he started playing as an opener. When a captain shows such kind of belief on a youngster the morale and confidence gets increased. Gautam Gambhir said, “Where Rohit Sharma is today, it is because of M.S. Dhoni,”
He further added, “You can talk about the selection committee and team management, but if you do not have the backing from your captain then it is all useless. Everything is in the hands of the captain. How Dhoni backed Rohit Sharma over a period of time, I don’t think any other player has been given such support”.
Rohit Sharma’s stats surely improved since he started opening for Team India. Rohit is the only batsman in the world to score 3 double hundreds. At many occasions Gautam Gambhir has criticized Dhoni for not showing proper support to the players, but at the same time, he praised Dhoni for believing in youngsters like Rohit Sharma and transforming them into a complete batsman.
Since Rohit started opening, he has scored more than 7000 runs in 138 innings with an average of 58.11 and a strike rate of 92.27.
Gautam also believes Rohit Sharma has a bigger impact on white ball cricket as compared to Indian Captain Virat Kohli.
