Mirzapur 2 Review: Worth the Wait but…

Disclaimer: In this Mirzapur 2 review, I am only going to talk about the technical aspects of the series that impressed me and disappointed me. There will be no spoilers in this review, so you can read it carefree. Also you can totally agree or disagree with my personal opinions about this season.

Mirzapur 2 review

After the wait of 2 long years, Amazon Prime Video India has finally released the second season of Mirzapur on 23rd October, 2020. The excitement and the hype around this series is unimaginable. This time there are 10 episodes with an average running time of 55 minutes.

When the first season was released back in 2018, it got a good response from the audience but the violence factor was heavily criticized. In Mirzapur 2, we dived deep into the lives of the characters and got to learn more about their bad as well as good qualities. But there are some things that I liked and disliked in this season, let’s talk about that.

MIRZAPUR 2 REVIEW

CINEMATOGRAPHY

One of the very first thing about Mirzapur 2 that got my attention was the cinematography by Sanjay Kapoor. The close-up shots, the aerial shots, the addition of cultural information in the frames and the long one take shots made the viewing experience very enjoyable.

The action sequences in this season is comparatively steadier than season 1. In the third episode, the long one take shot really impressed me, the transition of the camera from ground level to the top of the building is mind-blowing. Sanjay Kapoor utilised every material given to him.

PRODUCTION DESIGN

The world of Mirzapur created by Abhijit Gaonkar & Sonam Singh is very very appreciable. The rich culture of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar is clearly visible in the series. The Bungalows, the sheds, the quarters and the godowns were so well designed.

WRITING & DIALOGUES

The best thing about Mirzapur was the writing and above that was the dialogues written by Puneet Krishna & Vineet Krishna. If you belongs to UP or if you are familiar with the place, you will definitely appreciate the authentic dialogues used in this series. They were correct and suitable for that situation. But in season 2, somehow these factors got a little unsettling.

In season 2, everything was going fine until the 6th episode. The story started to drag from there and it stretched till Episode 9. The feel of the action thriller was left in between those subplot developments.

LENGTH & EDITING

As I told you earlier, the episodes were around an hour long, so the binge watching experience got a little tiring, specially in the second half of the season where the narrative was struggling to find a way out. If the editing was done a bit tighter, the thrill could have been better.

DIRECTION

Mirzapur 2 was partially directed by Gurmmeet Singh & Mihir Desai, but most of the episodes were under the supervision of Gurmmeet alone. The show has quite a lot of ups & downs in the last few episodes. Some creative choices were good and some were totally not understandable.

Like there were many references from season 1 used in here. In the beginning, it’s nice to see the famous memes getting a rewind but after a while it got repetitive. Also in this season, the creators have chosen to minimise the violence in order to give space to more character development.

There were a lot of romantic angles created in 7th & 8th episode, which I personally don’t liked that much. Yes it was necessary to bring a change in a character but it got very jarring at the end. And due to that, the action scenes got suffered which made the thrill in season 2 go away. Overall the direction is fine but not amazing like the first season.

PERFORMANCES

As you have expected, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit, Shweta Tripathi as Golu Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi as Akhandanand Tripathi and Divyendu Sharma as Munna Tripathi outshines everyone. Their screen presence were amazing and natural.

Supporting cast of the season 2 includes Vijay Varma, Isha Talwar, Rasika Dugal, Amit Sial, Harshita Gaur, Priyanshu Painyuli, Rajesh Tailang, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Shaji Chaudhary, Sheeba Chaddha, Anjum Sharma, Asif Khan, Shernavaz Jijina, Pramod Pathak, Paritosh Sand, Anil George and many more. They have done justice to their given characters. Without them, the lead actors wouldn’t be able to perform this fine.

As a whole, Mirzapur 2 is good but not great. This season provided me answers and some new questions to think about. The expectation from Mirzapur 2 was to get much more from this but the creators have settled down for less this time maybe they have a some bigger plans for season 3.

MIRZAPUR 3?

Look, the point at which the story has ended in this season, it clearly indicates that there’s a season 3 coming very soon. And due to the slow narrative in the middle which gave time for some character development, Mirzapur 3 has a lot to offer now. The addition of politics into the Mirzapur business will definitely be interesting to watch.
