The 5 times grand slam champion, Maria Sharapova says goodbye to tennis at the age of 32. Born in April 19, 1987 Maria Sharapova announced her retirement in an essay written for Vanity Fair Vogue which was posted online on Wednesday. Sharapova asks, “How do you leave behind the only life you’ve ever known?”

Sharapova made her debut on 2001 at the age of 14, and she played her first WTA tournament at the Pacific Life Open in 2002.

At the age of 17 she won Wimbledon, and went on to achieve two titles of French Open, one each at US Open and Australian Open.

Sharapova was dealing with Shoulder problem for years and it was affecting her game. Sharapova played only two matches this season and lost both the matches. Maria Sharapova was banned for 15 months after she failed the doping test on 2016. This affected her game very badly and since then she only managed to reach only one major quarterfinal.

After achieving so much on and off the tennis court, Sharapova lost consecutive 4 matches at Grand Slam Tournaments. In Australian Open she was beaten by 6-3,6-4 by Donna Vekic. Currently Sharapova ranks 373.

After than defeat Sharapova was asked whether it was her last appearance to which she replied, “I don’t know”. Maria Sharapova is one of the most popular sportswoman in the world to ever grace the tennis court. Maria Sharapova was ranked world number 1 in singles by WTA on five different occasions.

Achievements Of Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova was born in Russia but later she shifted to America, she has been the permanent resident of US since 1994. She is the only Russian to hold the career Grand Slam. Maria Sharapova also won a silver medal in women’s single at Summer Olympics in London,2012. She has hold a list of achievement which include 36 titles in total.

On March,2012 Maria Sharapova was named as 100 Greatest All Time Tennis Player by a tennis channel. She has been the face of many brands like Nike, Prince and Canon and most specifically Cole Haan. Since 2007, she has been the goodwill ambassador of United Nations Development Programme.

According to Forbes, she has been named as one of the highest paid athletes and highest paid female athletes for consecutive 11 years and earned nearly $285 Million. The achievement of Maria Sharapova has been uncountable, she has contributed a lot in the tennis court. Her endeavouring has been the result of her hard work, persistence, dedication and commitment.
