With no proper vaccine, it is difficult to assume when the world will return back to normalcy. Steep rise in coronavirus cases in India has made it clear that theatres will not open soon. Even if it opens there is a sense of fear among people to go in public places. Now the Production house are not ready to incurr more losses and the producers can’t afford to hold the film anymore.
To avoid this situation, big banner films like Gulabo Sitabo starring Amitabh Bachchan & Ayushmann Khurrana released on Amazon prime, Laxmi Bomb, Sooryavanshi, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl & Sadak 2 are planning to head towards OTT release.
Sadak 2 will mark the return of Mahesh Bhatt. The film is a sequel to 1991 release Sadak and casts Aditya Roy Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt & Pooja Bhatt in lead. Sadak was one of the biggest hits of 90’s, and audience were highly anticipating the theatrical release of the film. The film is made for eye captivating theatre experience, but seeing the situation now it seems next to impossible.
Tough days are ahead for Film Exhibitors and Distributors, if there is no film release there is no revenue. The producer will make its money by selling the film to digital streaming platforms, but they are the one who will suffer the most because of this pandemic.
The film Exhibitors are unhappy with producers decision of releasing the film in OTT. The Exhibitors have criticized Producers decision of looking to survive without thinking about them. The Exhibitors believe theatre is proper medium to release the film & producers should wait untill the everything comes back to normal.
Kamal Gianchandani CEO, PVR Pictures said, “We are disappointed with some producers for going straight to streaming platforms instead of acceding to our request to hold back releases till cinemas reopen. That said, this is not the first time films are being premiered on OTT. Cinema exhibition has regularly faced competition from new emerging distribution platforms over the last many years and still continued to enjoy the patronage of cinegoers.”
In the coming days if things turn more drastic without any proper solution, then there’s no doubt there would be line of producers waiting for OTT release.
