In match 8 of IPL 2020, Kolkata Night Riders defeated David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad to register the first win of the season. David Warner feels they were 30-40 runs short of the total.
A terrific team performance from KKR saw them conquer SRH at Abu Dhabi in their 2nd match of the season on Saturday after losing their first match to Mumbai Indians.
First KKR bowlers with their top-notch bowling display restricted the SRH batsman from scoring big as they found it struggling in front of 3 spinners of KKR. They only managed to post 142-4 after their 20 overs.
KKR brought in Varun Chakraborty and under 19 sensation Kamlesh Nagarkotti in place of Nikhil Naik and Sandeep Warrier. Dinesh Karthik used 7 bowlers in total and rotated them nicely to keep SRH batsman in pressure and it was seen as David Warner took 30 balls to score 36 while Wriddhiman Saha struggled to pace his innings as he consumed 31 balls to score only 30 runs.
Pat Cummins also came to the party and bowled tight line and length as reckoned by David Warner who also said that they were a bit slow and an extra 30-40 runs would have given them an opportunity.
“Patty Cummins, as he does, bowled Test-match line and length. There was a little bit of movement here and there. All in all, it got harder through the middle. We went four or five overs for 20 and coming back with three wickets in hand at the end probably killed us a little bit there. An extra 30 or 40 runs would have been great” , he said.
Shubam Gill top knock of 70 off 62 balls and Eoin Morgan(42 off 29) support from the other end meant KKR didn’t need the service of Andre Russell as they chased down the total with 2 overs to spare and also improved their run rate.
While David Warner sticks with his decision of batting first but accepted that it was difficult wickets to put runs on the board.
“I think I got my decision right. For us, our strength is death bowling. I thought it was actually a difficult wicket to accelerate on. The Kolkata boys showed us that if you can keep wickets at the end, that’s what wins you games. I don’t regret what I did at the beginning of the game and I stick by my decision. We have to try and go harder at the top”, he added.
He also said that lots of dot balls in this format are not acceptable as they consumed a total of 35 dot balls.
“But, we got to improve our boundary percentage. I saw, I think 35 dot balls, which not acceptable in T20 cricket on a wicket that was actually nice to bat on. We just mis-executed in the middle”, said Warner.
