15 men squad has been announced for the upcoming home series of India against South Africa in September this year.
But the big news is, MS Dhoni has made himself unavailable for the upcoming series.
As soon as the news broke people have started speculating that Dhoni has already played his last international match in Blue Jersey.
The 15 men squad includes Virat Kohli(Captain), Rohit Sharma (Vice-Captain), KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, Rahul Chahar and Khaleel Ahmed.
Earlier reports suggest that the selectors had decided to drop the former captain and stick to the young Indian Wicket keeper/batsman Rishabh Pant. However later official statement confirmed that MS Dhoni made himself unavailable for the SA tour.
Moments after the squad was announced national selector gave an official statement, “There is no question of ignoring him. On the contrary, he has given us time to go ahead and plan the future with keeping an eye on the World T20 next year. He realises that the team comes first before public opinions. Considering the fact that we still don’t have a genuine replacement if Rishabh gets injured in the shorter format, Dhoni has agreed to hold on. At present, there is no question of ignoring him. Also, just prior to the WI tour, he took a two-month sabbatical.I am sure we are all good with our maths,” he said. But it seems a confusing statement because at the beginning of WI tour the official statement of the selector was, “From Now on our first choice for wicket-keeper will be Rishabh Pant across all three formats”.
MS Dhoni has taken two months of sabbatical after World Cup and is currently vacationing in United States after serving the Territorial Army for 15 days.
But the big question is, will the Selector again go back to MS Dhoni when he is away from the dressing room for so many months.
Backing out from the T20 series clearly hints that the selectors have now started looking beyond MS Dhoni for the ICC T20 World Cup.
India is going to face WI later this year in a home series consisting of 3 T20s and 3 ODIs. So the question is, is BCCI and Team Management planning to give a farewell series to the legend. Or the Veteran wants to hold himself till IPL 2020. It would be interesting to see what lies ahead for Captain Cool.
