Tehran: An Iranian missile fired during a training exercise in the Gulf of Oman struck a support vessel near its target, killing 19 sailors.
According to the Public Relations of the 1st Maritime District of Navy of Iranian Army in Bandar Abbas, 19 Iranian was martyred and a 15 were injured during a military drill in Iran’s territorial waters on Sunday.

Rescue and relief operations began soon after the incident and the injured persons were evacuated and sent to medical centers, the statement said.
Iran like to hold exercises regularly in the Gulf of Oman region, to mark their strong presence at strategic Strait of Hormuz, a narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of the world’s oil passes.
The friendly fire incident happened near the port of Jask, some 1,270 kilometers (790 miles) southeast of Tehran, in the Gulf of Oman, state TV said.
It is to note that earlier Iranian media reported that only one sailor killed in the friendly fire accident but now the death toll increased by 18.
The statement said that the accident happened to the “Konarak” vessel in this area within the waters of Jask Port in southern Iran.
Usually Iranian media didn’t cover any news like this. The incidents happen in such a time when tension between US & Iran is already at its apex.
Expert investigations are underway about the cause of the incident, the statement said, asking everyone to avoid raising speculations, reported by Iran News Agency IRNA.
