England vs Pakistan 2020 2nd Test

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in the second test match against England at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Thursday. England leads the three-match series 1-0 after their nail-biting win in the first test match by 3 wickets chasing 277 runs.

England has named a few changes in their playing lX as they brought All-rounder Sam Curran in place of their Champion all-rounder Ben Stokes who is due to miss the last two tests to be with his family in New Zealand due to family reasons. And Zak Crawley comes in for pacer Jofra Archer.

Pakistan has brought in Batsman Fawad Alam in place of Shadab Khan who will play his first test in 11 years after he last played in 2009.

Pakistan is heading into the Test after having lost the series opener in Manchester despite dominating it for the most part.

Azhar Ali has been widely criticized for his decision & captaincy after his side’s opening Test defeat in Manchester.

He is a less experienced captain, having only been given the job in November. While the manner of the loss, coming after Pakistan had dominated the game for the best part of four days, was certainly disappointing, the criticism of Azhar has been over the top.

Wasim Akram said that he should have bowled Naseem Shah more overs. and that Pakistan missed the trick by not bowling enough bouncers and short deliveries to out of form Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler who set the tone of the Match.

He may have been more aggressive when Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler came to the crease. He may have brought Yasir Shah back into the attack earlier after tea.

Pakistan opener Shan Masood and star batsman Babar Azam shone after which pacers and Yasir Shah ran through the England batting unit to give them a 107-run first-innings lead in the Manchester Test. Despite coming up with an ordinary batting show in the 2nd innings, Pakistan managed to set a target of 277.

England were looking set to lose yet another series opener when they were reeling at 117 for 5, having lost both Joe Root and Ben Stokes. However, a fiery counter-attacking display from Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes helped England get past the finish line with 3 wickets to spare.

Stuart Broad picked up six wickets while
Buttler and Chris Woakes made 75 and 84* runs knock respectively to guide the home team to victory.

It’s going to be difficult for Pakistan to make a comeback, given England will have their tails up after the sensational win in Manchester. However, the absence of Ben Stokes who has opted out of the last 2 Tests due to personal reasons gives Pakistan a chance to level the series in Southampton.

With England in form and Pakistan desperate to equal the series, the fans can expect another fine contest this week.

Pitch and playing conditions in Southampton

The wicket is expected to be dry, given the sunshine in Southampton over the last few days. However, bad weather might play spoilsport, given thunderstorms are forecasted for Day 2 and Day 3. England lost to West Indies in Southampton on a relatively slow track and expect conditions to be similar for the upcoming Test.
