Eng vs Aus 1st T20I
England beat Australia in the 1st of the 3 T20 international match series at the Southampton here on Friday. England posted 162-7 in their 20 overs to which Australia after their brilliant start collapsed.
A brilliant display of batting by Dawid Malan and a late Australian collapse helped England emerge victorious by 2 runs in what was looking like an easy win for the Aussies.
After a good start by the opening pair of David Warner and Aaron Finch who put 97 runs for the 1st Wicket, the visitors collapsed from 124-1 in 14 overs to 160-6 in 20 overs to give a 1-0 lead to the hosts.
Australian Captain Aaron Finch chose to bowl first after winning the toss in Southampton. A new opening pair for England in the form of Jos Buttler and Johnny Bairstow came to bat.
Eoin Morgan had already announced earlier that Jos Buttler will open the innings and the player of the series of the recently concluded series between England and Pakistan admired his new position very much as he smoked 44 runs off 29 balls at the strike rate of 151.
Bairstow scored 8 runs while Buttler departed after giving a flying start. England’s middle-order also collapsed with Banton, Morgan, and Moeen Ali departing cheaply by the Ashton Agar and part-time off-spin of Maxwell. But Malan kept hold of one hand and made 66 runs to give England a respectable total 162-7.
Australia started their innings very well with Warner(58) and Finch(46) stitching a 97 runs partnership before Finch was sent to Pavillion by Jofra Archer. Australia were looking composed with 124-1 in 14 overs requiring just 39 runs in 36 balls before Adil Rashid turned the match on his heads by cleaning both Smith and Maxwell from the crease in a single over.
Warner also lost his wicket in the next over having brilliantly scored a half-century. Australian innings collapsed with Marcus Stoinis also not finding his rhythm as he only managed to make 23 runs in his 18 deliveries.
Australia needed 19 runs off 2 overs when Chris Jordon bowled a brilliant over to give away just 4 runs. Tom Curran bowled a brilliant last over just getting hit 1 six in 6 balls to take the match by 2 runs. England now leads the 3 match series 1-0.
