Drishyam 2 Review: A Satisfactory Sequel to a Great Thriller

Drishyam 2 review

Disclaimer: In this Drishyam 2 review, I am only going to talk about the good and bad aspects of the film. There won’t be any spoiler in here, so you can read this review carefree.

Drishyam 2 is the sequel to the much celebrated 2013 Malayalam crime thriller Drishyam written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. Actors like Mohanlal, Meena, Asha Sarath, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Siddique from the first film have retrieved their roles while some new faces like Anjali Nair, Murali Gopy, Saikumar, Sumesh Chandran, Ganeshkumar and more have joined the cast in part 2.

This film starts off 6 years later to the actual event. At first it seems like Georgekutty and his family have moved on from their past but  continuous interference of people and police in their daily life to enquire about the murder have traumatized them all deeply. Fans of part 1 will remember that Georgekutty loves cinema, so to expand his involvement in this field he had opened a movie theatre and is working on a script to make a film.

On the other hand, a new I.G. was appointed in town and just like other inspectors he was also after Georgekutty’s case. Even after 6 years, the police were still trying to gather information about the happenings of 3rd August, 2013. How the investigation proceeded and how the things will take a turn in this case was the ultimate plot of this movie!

The very first thing that you will notice was the setup of the location. Cinematographer Satheesh Kurup has beautifully captured the essence of Thodupuzha, Kerala through his lens. The mountains, the forest, the township everything looks absolutely gorgeous. The set designing and costume designing have to be appreciated separately as they provided authenticity to the characters.

Now talking about the performances, Mohanlal as usual was our center of attention, the film revolves around him and his activities. It was just delightful to watch him perform his role with ease. The main supporting characters Rani(Meena), Saritha(Anjali Nair) and IG Thomas Bastin(Murali Gopy) were actually the ones who provided the storyline, the much needed tension to develop interest. Actors Ansiba and Esther, who played Anju and Anu respectively portrayed their characters with accurate human emotions.

But there something missing in Drishyam 2 and that was the thrill, it’s not right to compare but it’s necessary. Honestly speaking, in the original Drishyam we were more engaged in the storytelling than this because there was a murder mystery to solve but here we already know what had happened and what can happen! It’s kind of predictable to a point. Writer and director Jeethu Joseph tries very hard to maintain the pace and he somehow did it.

Drishyam 2 felt more like a book to me, where we were slowly unfolding the aftermath of the case. In the first hour of its running time, the story progressed in such a way that it seems like that was it but as soon as we enter the last hour mark, things accelerated real quick. It was a mess, a good mess which was hard to solve and pretty complex to understand. Unpredictable things started to happen and at last it reached to a satisfactory ending where no one wins, no one loses.

Drishyam & Drishyam 2 may be criticised for the police investigation procedure and systematic failure but we have to understand that it’s a film. All the happenings were created as per the story demands. This film is definitely a good watch for anyone and a must see for Drishyam (2013) fans. It is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
