DRDO successfully flight tested Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) today at 1145 hrs from Wheeler Island off the coast of Odisha.
SMART is a missile assisted release of lightweight Anti-Submarine Torpedo System for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations far beyond Torpedo range.This launch and demonstration is significant in establishing Anti-Submarine warfare capabilities.
All the mission objectives including missile flight up to the range and altitude, separation of the nose cone, release of Torpedo and deployment of Velocity Reduction Mechanism (VRM) have been met perfectly.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulate s DRDO in this success, he said, “The DRDO India has successfully flight tested the Supersonic Missile assisted release of Torpedo, SMART. This will be a major technology breakthrough for stand-off capability in anti-submarine warfare. I congratulate DRDO and other stakeholders for this significant achievement.”

It is a Hybrid weapon system where two weapon capabilities are combined to make one weapon system that vastly expands the range and speed of a weapon system.
SMART has the capability to kill submarine far beyond the range than any torpedoes, once inducted it will increase the Indian Navy capability in Anti-Submarine warfare.
In future Anti Submarines Warfare of Indian Navy is going to increase significantly with the induction of 18 P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft, 24 MH-60R Seahawk ASW helicopters, 4 ASW frigates and 16 ASW-SWC corvettes.
A number of DRDO laboratories including DRDL, RCI Hyderabad, ADRDE Agra, NSTL Visakhapatnam have developed the technologies required for SMART.
