HSTDV to SMART, DRDO conducted successful trial of 7 different flight vehicles in last 1 month


The last one month has been very busy for the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as they conducted 7 successful flight tests.

This all started with the successful flight test of HSTDV on 7 September and end up with the flight of SMART on 5 October.

These frequent flight test conducted amid the border tension with China in Eastern Ladakh.

These are the 7 flight test test that were conducted by DRDO in last one month.

1. HSTDV – 07 September 2020

The first major milestone DRDO achieved with the successful flight test of Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) on 07 September 2020.

HSTDV is tested with indigenously developed Scramjet engine which helps this vehicle to cruise at a hypersonic speed which means 6 times more than the speed of sound.

In future DRDO will be able to make hypersonic missile with this technology demonstrator.

it has also multiple civilian applications including the launching of small satellites at low cost.

With the successful test of HSTDV, India become the fourth country in the world after United States, Russia and China who has a hypersonic technology.

2. ABHYAS: High Speed Expendable Aerial Target – 22 September 2020

On 22 September 2020, DRDO successfully conducted the flight test of ABHYAS – High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT).

As the name suggests, Abhyas will be used as a target for air defence weapon practices. It has a capability to fly at a altitude 5 km, with a speed of 0.5 mach for 30 minutes.

It has RCS (Radar Cross section), Visual, and Infra Red that can be augmented to stimulate a variety of aircraft which can used as a target for variety of air defence.

Abhyas will replace British origin Target technology ‘Banshee’ in India.

3. Laser Guided ATGM from MBT Arjun – 23 September 2020

The vary next day, DRDO successfully conducted the trial firing of Laser Guided Anti Tank Guided Missile from MBT (Main Battle Tank) Arjun.

However the test was not conducted with Arjun tank, rather Tank Ex was used in this test which has a MBT Arjun turret.

4. BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile – 30 September 2020

The another test DRDO was conducted is the BrahMos surface-to-surface supersonic cruise missile on 22 September 2020.

Although BrahMos is already inducted in Indian Armed Forces, this time the test conducted with indigenous Booster which helped this missile to neutral target at a distance of 400 KM.

Previously the BrahMos missile used to use Russian origin booster to propel in early stages.

5. Laser Guided ATGM – 01 October 2020

Laser Guided Anti Tank Guided Missile was successfully tested on 01 October, defeating a target located at longer range. This time test was conducted from MBT Arjun in continuation of successful trial done on 22nd sep 2020.

6. Shaurya Ballistic Missile – 03 October 2020

DRDO on Saturday successfully test fired a new variant of Nuclear capable Shaurya ballistic missile.

This variant of Shaurya missile is lighter and easier to operate in comparison with the existing missile, In last phase while moving close to its target, the missile moves at hypersonic speed.

It has capability to neutralise target at the range of 700-1900 KM.

7. SMART – 05 October 2020

SMART Missile successfully tested

The another big milestone which was achieved by DRDO in last 1 month is the successful test of Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART).

SMART is a missile assisted release of lightweight Anti-Submarine Torpedo System for Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations far beyond Torpedo range.This launch and demonstration is significant in establishing Anti-Submarine warfare capabilities.

It is a Hybrid weapon system where two weapon capabilities are combined to make one weapon system that vastly expands the range and speed of a weapon system.

SMART has the capability to kill Submarines with supersonic speed at a distance of more than 600 KM, which is highest in the world for any Supersonic Torpedoe.

Once Inducted, SMART will significantly increase the Anti Submarines Warfare capability of Indian Navy.

Future Tests of DRDO

It seems DRDO is not gonna to stop in coming days. Already a Area warning released by India regarding “Launch of Experimental Flight Vehicle” in the Bay Of Bengal area.

The launch window for this Experiment Flight Vehicle is in between 12-14 October.

There is also high chances that India will conduct pre-induction trial of its Long Range Subsonic Cruise Missile ‘Nirbhay’ by the end of October or in early November.

Nirbhay has a range 1,000 KM which will help India in countering China missile arsenal in Eastern Ladakh.
