A big news for IPL fans. England white ball captain Eoin Morgan will now be leading KKR as Dinesh Karthik has decided to quit captaincy. This is a surprising decision, as none would have expect the Indian wicketkeeper batsman to quit the role of captaincy when things were going right for him.

In this season, under Dinesh Karthik’s leadership KKR have won 4 out of 7 matches and are at number 4 position in the points table with 8 points. Dinesh Karthik came into KKR in 2018 and lead the franchise for 2 years. However Dinesh failed to attain any IPL titles but he had played a big role during the transition of the team.

Venky Mysore, CEO of KKR said, “We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this. While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes.”

He further added, “We are also fortunate that Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, who has been the vice captain, is willing to lead the side going forward. DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner”.

Dinesh Karthik’s captaincy in this season of IPL have been criticized a lot. Dinesh Karthik was blamed for all the matches the team lost. The wicketkeeper batsman batting form has also been questionable, however in the game against KXIP, Dinesh showed a glimpse of his greatness. His match winning knock of 56 runs in 29 balls helped KKR in defeating KXIP.

It would be interesting to see from here on how Eoin Morgan leads the side and what will be the role of Dinesh Karthik as a batsman. In past few games we have witnessed that the communication between Dinesh and Eoin was pretty good on the field.

Sometimes a batsman succumb under the pressure of being the captain of a team. After the pressure has been lifted Dinesh could offer a lot to the team with the bat and as a wicketkeeper.
