A tempting win for Delhi Capitals. Shreyas Iyer’s DC defeated Steve Smith Rajasthan Royals by 13 runs. The injuries couldn’t stop the Delhi men from winning this match. While this win has increased the chances of Delhi Capitals of qualifying to the playoffs, Rajasthan Royals can suffer big time. The tournament has entered it’s second phase and now all the teams will come out and express themselves, RR’s dip in form is a big concern for the management.

The tactic of sending Ben Stokes up the order is questionable, the management is trying to go with left – right hand combination but in that process RR’s middle order is getting weak and pressure always comes on young batsman like Rahul Tewatia and Riyan Parag.
But credit should go to Delhi Capitals as they are proving with every game that they are tough contenders for this year’s title. Rajasthan Royals now stand at number 7 position on the points table with just 6 points in 8 matches, while is at the top of the table with 12 points.

Match Summary:

Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first as he believed wicket would have slowed down a bit in the later half of the game, and surely it was a right decision. When Delhi came into bat high expectations were riding on the openers shoulder. The injury of Rishabh Pant has caused some confusion in the management as in the previous game against MI Delhi Capitals batting line up struggled a bit.

But the young Prithvi Shaw couldn’t survive in front of lethal Jofra Archer. In the first ball itself, Jofra’s swinging delivery took away Prithvi Shaw’s middle stump and what was more interesting than that, was Archer’s way of celebration by doing Bihu dance. Bringing Jofra Archer back into action helped Delhi to attain one more wicket. Out of form Rahane gave an easy catch to Robin Uthappa.

What mattered at that time was experience and who could do it better than Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer. Shikhar and the captain Iyer’s partnership of 85 runs in just 55 balls forced Rajasthan to go on backfoot. But then the young Kartik Tyagi by picking two important breakthroughs of Shikhar and Shreyas Iyer made his team to do a comeback. Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey small cameos helped the team to get to a fightable score of 161. However Rajasthan bowlers bowled the death overs really well by giving only one 6 and one 4 in the last four overs.

When Rajasthan Royals came into bat Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes were looking in a good touch but Anrich Notje razor guided missile at a speed of 155 Kph sended Jos Buttler back to the dressing room. In the last ball of the third over, Rajasthan’ skipper couldn’t survive in front of Ashwin’s genius.

After that Ben Stokes and Sanju Samson tried to built a strong partnership but the increasing run rate took away Ben Stokes wicket. Just after the departure of Stokes, Sanju Samson crumbled under the pressure and gave his wicket to left hand spinner Axar Patel. The form of Sanju Samson is an early warning signal for RR. Sanju played a big role for RR in the first few games but after that his dipping form has again raised criticism by the experts.

The 15 th over by Ashwin, where the right handed off spinner gave only 2 runs increased pressure on Robin and newly arrived Tewatia. That was truly a game changing over, till then RR were going strong and quite well managing the required run rate. The pressure on Robin Uthappa lead to his fall of wicket.

Rahul Tewatia, Jofra Archer tried to fight till the end, but the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Nortje completely pushed them to backfoot. Both the South African fast bowlers choked the Rajasthan batsmen by bowling at the right line and lengths. Delhi Capitals bowling unit has been one of the best in this tournament. R. Ashwin and Axar Patel as the spinner have helped Delhi to contain the flow of runs, while Rabada, Nortje have been picking important wickets in the crunch moments.
