DA 5 BLOODS REVIEW
The film is a well crafted tale of a journey that teaches you so much about our Black people, their history and the general human behaviour. It shares light on the ground reality of some things that were left unexplored in the past. During this worldwide “Black Lives Matter” movement, this film becomes a must watch for many reason.
Now let’s discuss some technical aspects that were important and that helped in the making of the film. Don’t worry there’s no spoilers ahead. Before I start, let me tell you these are my opinions on these things, so if you don’t find it similar to yours please don’t get mad at me. Now let’s start.
The first thing you will find extremely likeable in the film is the cinematography by Newton Thomas Sigel. His use of angles and movements in several shots, make those scenes felt real. The running shots, aerial shots, close-ups, wide shots etc everything just fits perfectly to the scenes.
The next thing which is undoubtedly the best thing about this film, is the action choreography. You know how to make a war drama real, just make it’s action grounded. All those gunshots and injuries reactions were on point, no exaggeration done by anyone.
Paul(Delroy Lindo) is the guy that steals the show. His emotional breakdowns were the highlights of the film. Chadwick Boseman is the real surprise and you will know it when you watch it. I really want to talk about everyone but that will spoil the whole film for you here. But I want to say that all the characters have layers which you will discover through it’s running time.
The film is written by Danny Bilson, Kevin Willmott, Paul De Meo and Spike Lee. Other the direction, writing is one strong part of Da 5 Bloods. Every character has something to do and they have a story to tell. The film never slows down and that happens only when your writers provide you with good subplots.
The introduction shot of Norm is an odd one, the aerial shot used for it didn’t goes well as planned. The effects used in hiding the aging of the main characters is also a problem, their young selves were not felt young to me at all. Other than that I didn’t find any fault in the VFX and I guess that’s because most of them were shot in real locations.
At last, in my conclusion I can say that this movie is an eye-opener and the release time really helped it get into my head. There are many problems in the film and that only depends on your perspective and your way of perceiving it.
If you ignore it and watch the movie for it’s story, then only can you can enjoy it and learn something from it. You can stream the movie right now on Netflix.
