Cyclone “Amphan” to intensify into a cyclonic storm says IMD

New Delhi- Cyclone Amphan to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Sunday and very severe cyclonic storm by May 19



On Saturday Indian Meteorology Department said, “the cyclone “Amphan” over southeast Bay of Bengal and neighborhood is likely to get intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours and a very severe cyclonic storm by tomorrow”.

The Wind speed will hit 170 to 180 Kmph, and leaping to 200 Kmph on Tuesday and will bring heavy rainfall in coastal region of Odisha and West Bengal. “It lay centered over the same region at 1730 hrs IST of today (May 16) near latitude 10.9°N and longitude 86.3°E, about 1040 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 1200 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 1300 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh),” the IMD said in its bulletin issued at 8.30 pm.

According to PTI report, the Odisha government has requested the Centre to stop the running of “Shramik Special” train in the state, keeping the view of cyclonic storm. The fishermen has been requested not to go into south Bay of Bengal from May 16-17, Central Bay of Bengal 17-18 and north Bay of Bengal from 19-20.

The district of Gangetic West Bengal including North and South 24 Parganas, Kolkata East and West Midnapore, Howrah and Howlgy will face the impact. The Odisha Government has brace itself and preparing for all the measures and precautions to be taken.

The IMD said, ““The coastal Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy falls at isolated places from May 18 evening, heavy to very heavy rainfalls at a few places on May 19 and isolated heavy rainfall over northeast Odisha on May 20.”

The National Crisis Management Comittee (NCMC) and the NDRF Armed Forces and Indian Coast Guard have come into action and are coordinating with the State Government.

The Cyclone Fani which hit Odisha in 2019 caused a lot of damage. The estimated damage caused by Cyclone Fani was 24,176 Crore. The cyclonic storm affected more than 1.3 Cr people. 72 people were killed by the Cyclonic storm.

The cyclonic storm Amphan will initially move north- northwestwards till 17th May and re urve to northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal towards West Bengal and adjoining Coastal areas of Odisha from May 18-20.
