Match 7, CSK vs DC
CSK skipper MS Dhoni hints at slow start and team combination played a part in their loss to Delhi Capitals by 44 runs in the 7th match of IPL 2020. Delhi Posted 175-3 in 20 overs while CSK only managed to score 131-7.
Dhoni explained that slow start from the openers did not give you momentum and once you don’t have the momentum then it’s adds pressure on the batters to follow.
“I don’t think it was a good game for us. There was no dew, but the wicket did slow down. We are lacking a bit of steam in the batting and that hurts. The run rate keeps on mounting after such slow starts and adds pressure, we need to figure that out.”
He further said that their team balance and combination is not perfect and they are playing an extra batsman. The addition of Ambati Rayudu from the next came will make things better.
“We need to come back with a clearer picture, looking at the combination. Maybe, the team balance will get better once Rayudu comes back in the next game. That will give us the room to experiment with an extra bowler perhaps. There are quite a few things we can think about. We are one batter extra to start off, so the players need to step up.”
Earlier, Prithvi Shaw played a blistering knock of 64 to help DC post a competitive total of 175-3. Rishabh pant played a cameo of 37 runs.
CSK openers had a slow start courtesy of a good start from the DC bowlers. Delhi spinners Azar Patel and Amit Mishra were brilliant in the middle overs who kept hold on the flow of the runs which added a lot of pressure on Du Plessis, R.Gaikwad and K.Jadhav. And by the time MS Dhoni came, it was too late for CSK as they lost by 44 runs.
On their bowling department, MS Dhoni pointed out that the bowlers need to step up and show the discipline as to bowl tight lines and lengths and avoid bowling boundary deliveries.
“We need to get better with our lengths, lines, and pace. I think the spinners have not come to the party yet. We are bowling good deliveries, but we are giving away the boundary deliveries bit too often. I’ll ask the players as there have been quite a few dropped catches. The players are not used to play under such lights, maybe the trajectory comes in the way. Now that you have said it, this can be an excuse for those dropped catches ” , added Dhoni.
