Chennai Super Kings two consecutive losses against Rajasthan Royals and now Delhi Capitals have raised many questions. The team seems to be in an island mid of the ocean. Everything is going wrong with the team, whether it’s Ambati Rayudu or Bravo’s injury, exclusion of Suresh Raina and Harrbhajan Singh from the tournament.
One of the most successful team of the tournament has completely lost its golden touch. Chennai has a huge fan base, but after each match the fans are left with disappointment. The success of CSK determines the success of IPL. This is the aura of the team and the man MS Dhoni, but it’s 2020.
Each time CSK has played they have qualified into the playoffs of the tournament, but this year after seeing their performance in past two matches it is really difficult to guess whether MS Dhoni lead CSK will be able to retain this record. These are the initial days of the tournament, but the management and the captain needs to find answers soon.
Key Reasons for CSK’s failure:
The Out of touch top order:
This is the biggest concern for Chennai Super Kings. Openers Murali Vijay and Shane Watson are failing to built a proper base for the team in the first 6 overs. Neither are the openers able to score runs in the first powerplay nor able to stay in the wicket till the end and take the responsibility. Scoring 21,22,25 will never help the team.
Shane Watson has been one of the greatest IPL legends, but the reality needs to be accepted. Shane Watson is looking in a good touch, but sadly he is not able to convert it into big runs. Murali Vijay seems completely out of space, he is not able to connect the ball properly and the reason behind this is his long time absence from T20 cricket.
Absence Of Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh:
Absence of Chinna Thalla is hurting the team badly. There’s a reason why he has been given the title Mr. IPL. Suresh Raina is the backbone of this team, coming at number 3 he controls the play. He perfectly knows when to attack and when to go on a defensive mode. A perfect fielder, batsman and at many instances you have seen Dhoni utilising him as a part time bowler. When the core players are not there, hardly we see a team getting a perfect balance.
The loss of Harbhajan is also a big setback for the team. An experienced bowler who could have used the dimensions of the field and take early wickets. Moreover Harbhajan Singh has a mastery in not conceding extra runs.
But the biggest setback for Chennai Super Kings is the injury of in formAmbati Rayudu and Dwayne Bravo. Rayudu played a key role and helped CSK in attaining the victory in the first match against MI. But since then he has injury, however the cricketer will be back in the playing 11 by the next game. But a single man can win you a match but not a tournament.
Dwayne Bravo is one of the biggest asset of the franchise. He is a man the captain looks upto, when the team is in difficult situation. He can do wonders with the bat, bowl and through his fielding, but his knee injury has certainly caused difficulties for MS Dhoni. But the Young Gun Sam Curran needs to applauded, what a team man he is.
Finisher MS Dhoni:
The world believes in Thala, but it seems Thala has stopped believing in himself. “MS Dhoni is CSK, CSK is Dhoni”. The biggest question of this IPL is why MS Dhoni is not backing himself and coming at number 5. When a player of calibre and stature like Dhoni comes to bat at number 7, it already gives a signal to the opposition that “We have given up”.
The best performance of Dhoni has come top of the order, still he manages to send Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadega, Sam Curran over him. What the fans need to accept is “Now he needs time”. He is no more a player who can hit every ball into the stands as soon as he comes into bat, but yes once he gets set he can take away the match from the opponent at any point of time. Players like Kedar Jadhav are very good, when 30-40 quick knock is needed, but to expect a match winning innings from them is certainly doubtful.
The only man who can win matches in those crucial situation is MS Dhoni. Take time and finish at the end. What’s the matter to walk into the field when the match is already gone. MS Dhoni walking into the field at number 7 surely is disheartening, he is the hope of every Chennai fans. By the time he walks into bat the required run rate is already 18-20 runs per over.
After his retirement from International Cricket, people expected to see vintage Dhoni back, but again with experience also comes over cautiousness. It’s agreeable, that MS Dhoni hasn’t played a single match since 14 months, but the best way to deal with it is batting at the middle.
The only way for now, is to restrict the opponent in low total. But again, the Bowlers are causing problems for CSK. Deepak Chahar, who was star of CSK in previous 2 season is failing to take early wickets. The early wickets is a key to CSK. MS Dhoni is playing with only 5 bowlers, and a bad day from one results in huge total. The Bowlers are failing in taking wickets at regular intervals, specially the spinners. Ravindra Jadega is not looking in best of his form while Piyush Chawla is conceding a lot of runs. The death bowling is also a big concern for team. In the match against Rajasthan, we saw how Lungi Ngidi gave 30 runs in the last over, which finally costed the match.
However time and again the Magical Captain MS Dhoni has proved all his critique wrong, and we hope he does this once again. When everything is against them, the team will surely come back hard. However this time there are many problems which the team and the captain needs to overcome. There are also positives like the performance of Sam Curran and Faf Du Plesis. Whenever the team needs them, this 2 guys stand tall.
