Chemical leak in LG Polymer Industry at Visakhapatnam, Thousands fall sick

Visakhapatnam Chemical gas LeakChemical leakage reported at LG Polymers industry in the outskirts of Visakhapatnam. People being taken to hospital after they complained of burning sensation in eyes & breathing difficulties. Police, fire tenders, ambulances reach spot.Details awaited.

The incident took place at around 03:00 AM at the LG Polymers plant.

As of now, 8 Dead including a minor, 200 plus peoples hospitalised and at least 5,000 have fallen sick.

It is feared that the fumes have spread over a radius of about 1.5-3 km radius or it could affect 20 villages nearby.

NDRF AND Officials have been rushed to evacuate people from surrounding areas.

Official have asked local people to cover their face with a wet cloth.

After hours of the leak, ANI quoted Visakhapatnam City Police Commissioner RK Meena as saying, “The gas has been neutralised. NDRF team has reached the spot. Maximum impact of the gas leak was in the 1-1.5 km radius but the smell spread upto 2-2.5 km. Around 100-120 people have been shifted to the hospital.”

It is to believe that styrene chemical was leaked from LG Polymer industry.

Principal Secretary to PM, Dr PK Mishra held a high level review meeting with Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary, NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority), NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), Director AIIMS on Vizag Gas Leak situation. Dr Mishra directed sending of team of experts to Vizag, measures for relief, rescue & short term and long term medical impact.
