The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canadian Paralympic Committee backs off from participating in Tokyo Olympics. The decision came after steep rise in number of deaths and cases of Coronavirus. Not only COC but several other stakeholders like US Track and Field, UK Athletics and several other national committee are calling for the delay of Olympics.
The Canadian Olympic Committee said, “The COC and CPC urgently call on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee(IPC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to postpone the game for one year and we offer them our full support in helping navigate all the complexities that rescheduling the game will bring”.
The IOC, International Olympic Committee, had said it’s ready to postpone the game but cancellation of Olympics is not the key. But now as Canada has backed out it will increase pressure on IOC to take action quickly. Canada is an important nation in Olympics. More than 314 athletes were to take part in this year summer Olympics and in Rio Olympics Canada won 22 medals.
All the sporting events across the globe are either called off or postponed and now Olympics is on the same path. The Australian Olympic Committee has told it’s athletes to prepare for Olympic 2021. In a statement Australian Olympic Committee said, “The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) says Australian athletes should prepare for a Tokyo Olympic Games in the northern summer of 2021, following the IOC’s announcement of a potential postponement of this year’s Games and changes in public health landscape in Australia and across the globe.”
In India all the sporting events are postponed or called off. The trials have also been cancelled. Players who will participate in Summer Olympics were kept in complete isolation, however Indian Olympic Committee has also lend it’s support of postponing the Olympics.
