Army variant of Light Utility Helicopter received Initial Operational Clearance

Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) received its IOC

Army variant of Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) has received the Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) from Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) at the Aero India 2021.

LUH had already completed its trials and also successfully demonstrated high altitude capability in Hot and High weather conditions in the Himalayas last year.

On receiving IOC, HAL CMD R Madhavan said the thrust is being given by HAL for indigenous R&D programmes towards self-reliance and enhancing operational effectiveness of Armed Forces.


IAF variant of LUH has already received its IOC and hopefully by the end of this year it will also receive its Final Operational Clearance (FOC).

HAL Light Utility Helicopter is a 3-ton class new generation single engine helicopter, which is indigenously designed and developed to replace the ageing fleet of Cheetah/Chetak helicopters operated by the Armed Forces.

It has an empty weight of 1,910 kg and can and 3,120 kg maximum take off weight. The helicopter is powered by a single turbo shaft engine Ardiden IU from SafranH HelicopterEngine (SHE)

It has a maximum speed of 250 km/h and can cruise at a speed of 235 km/h. It has a range of 350 KM and can carry 6 passengers onboard.

LUH is equipped with Smart Cockpit Display System (Glass Cockpit), state-of-the-art HUMS (Health & Usage Monitoring System) and is designed for various utility and armed roles.

The Indian armed forces have planned to acquire 187 Light Utility Helicopters. Out of 187 helicopters 126 are planned for the Indian Army and the remaining 61 for the Indian Air Force. 

HAL is also working to develop a civilian variant of Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) within the time span of four to five years.
