On Thursday, the selectors dropped KL Rahul from the test squad of 3 match test series against South Africa. The Selectors replaced KL Rahul with the young talent, Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill won his first call up to Test 15 men squad. In the absence of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma is likely to open the innings with Mayank Agarwal. Rohit Sharma made his Test debut in the year 2013, but he failed to cement his position in Indian Test Cricket Team. According to the experts, lack of consistency has been the main reason of Rohit’s failure in test cricket. The lower middle order batsman was highly criticized for throwing away his wickets in crucial situations.
Rohit played his last test match against Australia. He was included in 15 men Test squad against WI but was not selected in playing 11. Hanuma Vihari was choosed over Rohit Sharma for which the captain and the team management was highly criticized by media and Rohit Sharma’s fans.
The team management and the captain showed belief and trust and gave KL Rahul endless opportunities but he failed to deliver and now after his consecutive failure the selectors looked back to Rohit Sharma.
On this Chief Selector MSK Prasad said, “Yes, we are definitely looking at him (Rohit) and want to give him an opportunity up the order. He is keen (on opening) and the selection committee as well as everyone (team management) is keen. We want to see where he stands and then take a call”.
The Chief Selector further added, “He has been opening in white-ball cricket for more than a decade (since 2013)… We feel he has the ability to bat up the order, we have seen that in white-ball cricket, and if he can do that in red-ball cricket, then nothing like it. We have a lot of practice matches coming up, which will be a boost to this side.”
Rohit will be captaining the Board President’s XI in a three-day warm-up match against the Proteas in Vizianagaram from September 26. Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran and Ishant Porel are also part of the Board President’s XI. Earlier reports suggested that Abhimanyu Easwaran might also be given a chance.
There are few big questions which the selectors need to answer:
- Are they seeing Rohit Sharma for the long run ? Will the selectors stick to Rohit Sharma is the biggest question ? Shubman Gill has been included in playing 11 as a backup opener so will Rohit Sharma be given all the 3 matches.
- Will Rohit Sharma be an effective opener as he is in white ball Cricket ? It’s clearly now or never for Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma will open the innings and there is a difference between facing the red ball and white ball in the early overs. Does Rohit Sharma have that game and temperament up.
Since Rohit Sharma’s inclusion in test cricket, comparison have already been started of him with the former test opener Virendra Sehwag. Rohit Sharma needs to deliver as he is in the immense form after scoring 5 centuries in World Cup 2019.
It would be interesting to see will Rohit Sharma turn into a run away match winner in Test Cricket. Rohit Sharma needs to play a big role if India needs to conquer World Test Championship.
